Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL Test Drive with David Coulthard

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL Test Drive with David Coulthard

Seen here wearing an ‘AMG lumilectric magno’ paint job, the E-Cell promises to be the world’s first all-electric supercar, trumping the Tesla Roadster in both price and performance. The E-Cell will begin production in 2013.
Power for the E-Cell will be provided by four electric motors – all located at the rear of the vehicle – that are capable of revving to 12,000 rpm. Power for the setup totals 525 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque, good enough for a zero-to-62 time of just 4 seconds. For comparison, the gas-powered SLS can hit 62 from a standstill in 3.8 seconds.
Unlike the standard SLS, the E-Cell employs a permanent all-wheel drive system.
The car’s electric power will be provided by a set of lithium-ion batteries, located behind the cockpit and down the center tunnel. Made up of 324 lithium-ion polymer cells, the E-Cell’s batteries are capable of a 480 kW max load.
Due to the addition of all-wheel drive, the SLS’s front suspension had to be redesigned for the E-Cell version. Whereas the standard SLS employs a double wishbone axle, the E-Cell features an independent multilink suspension with pushrod damper struts.
In order to achieve maximum performance while simultaneously cutting weight, the E-Cell is fitted with AMG’s ceramic composite brakes. Measuring 402 x 39 mm at the front and 360 x 32 mm at the rear, the composite brakes are about 40 percent lighter than conventional cast-iron discs.
In addition to mechanical changes, the SLS E-Cell also features a number of styling tweaks to improve aerodynamics. The E-Cell’s front apron has been moved forward and features an extendable front splitter that moves downward by as much as 7 centimeters at speeds over 75mph, improving under body air flow. As no exhaust system was needed for the E-Cell, engineers added a new rear diffusor with a steeper angle, increasing the car’s overall downforce.
AMG 10-spoke light-alloy wheels with smooth surface technology are also part of the E-Cell package, as are more efficient LED headlights. The E-Cell sports a wider radiator grille with transverse slats and new hood-mounted air inlets to aid in cooling.
Of course the car’s interior has also been modified for the electric treatment, with the E-Cell’s cabin featuring a revised instrument cluster, a new 25cm touch screen in the center stack and a three-button setup to engage Drive, Reverse and Drive.

Bentley racing concept: Retro design, modern technology

Zdenko Vukoja’s Bentley Ecuador GT Racing Concept is a mix of the past and the present. The idea is simple, and interesting- what would Bentley vehicles in the ‘30s or ‘40s be like, if they had access to modern day technology, materials and knowledge? The designer has tried to keep the shape of the concept in-line with the car design at that time, and incorporated some of the modern design language as well. With a balanced approach, the concept does not look absolutely out of place, it does have elements of the past, and the present. Only, we’re not sure if it would actually be any good on the race track.

Insecta Concept Because Future Cars Belong To Insects

Concept Insecta

Insecta Concept

Taiwanese design student Shao Yung Yeh is responsible for this beautiful car concept inspired by a meng, the Chinese word for grasshopper. The concept is called Insecta and it was specially conceived to become the electric personal mobility vehicle of the future.
Insecta Concept
Yung Yeh developed his concept while he was taking part on an academic exchange between the Cheng Kung University in Taiwan with the Kunsthochschule Berlin in Germany and his work was supervised by professor Hartmut Ginnow-Merkert.
Insecta Concept
As many car concept designers are inspired by nature, Yeh decided that it would be a great idea to come up with something that resembles an insect like a grasshopper. Check out the video at the end of the post to see Insecta in action!
Insecta Concept
“Taking inspirations from nature, the exterior expresses the characteristics of friendly insects, such as grasshoppers - agile, lightweight and green. Compare that to mammals, a common inspiration of modern car design. Insects are more suitable for cars of the future generation,” said Yeh.
Insecta Concept
It’s easy to notice that the Insecta Concept has an aspect similar to one of a grasshopper as “the legs are connected to a central chassis as a thorax, while the canopy can be read as an insect’s head” and “the battery pack at the back symbolizes abdomen.”
Insecta Concept
The Insecta Concept will be powered by four electric motors positioned inside a special system at each wheel as “this not only increases the agility of driving, but also optimizes the space for a comfortable cabin.”
Insecta Concept
Once again you have to realize that this is only a concept and could never go into production, but the designer is very confident of the success of his design because “cars are always considered not mere products but also have life in some level, even like our pets.”
Insecta Concept
“In fact, a lot of kids in Asia are having insects like big beetles as pets. Maybe when they grow up and see some cars like Insecta, they might feel intimate with them. It is important to look for new design elements to appeal to upcoming customer generations,” concluded Yeh.
